Idaho Indie Fest '08 As great as Warped Tour is, it can be painful. The following day usually consists of sleeping, a tub of aloe vera, and trying to wash out the dirt that has made its way into places dirt should not be. The reason you go to the tour is for the full day of great bands at a cheap ticket price. Those who prefer to see the bands without excessive sunscreen are in luck. On Saturday, July 5th, Paragon Entertainment presents an all-day, indoor concert featuring twelve bands from across the country, including 4 from Boise. |

CD Artwork by Julia Green The Very Most's new release will make you SMiLE. 1966. That was the year. The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds, the first Batman film premiered, and The Very Most’s career-making Congratulations, Forever was released. Or at least it feels that way. Congratulations, Forever is a timeless appraisal of 60’s pop bands. Its smoothed out harmonies and divine duets drive the “Wall of Sound” songwriter Jeremy Jensen has created, and it has enough contemporary edginess to give it hipster credibility. Add one spoonful of The Monkees and Herman’s Hermits, a dash of Mazzy Star’s 90’s dream pop, and a whole lot of Beach Boys to the unparalleled work of Phil Spector and Congratulations, Forever’s buoyant, unique sound is created. It has the effervescence of both modern tracks like Hellogoodbye's "Baby It's Fact" and The Elected's "A Time For Emily," and golden oldies like The Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice." The release follows The Very Most's debut album Making the Case for Me. Jensen's sound is more in tune with his vision than his previous work on Making the Case. The pop is poppier, the hooks are as catchy as can be, and the overall attitude of the disc comes off as a more mature effort. |

This Saturday, everyone has the chance to support independence. No, it's not July 4th already. April 19th is nationally-observed Record Store Day . All across the country, independent record stores will unite to celebrate the presence of individuality among the Targets and Wal-Marts trying to corner the music market. Record Store Day is led by the Coalition of Independent Music Stores, Music Monitor Network, Newbury Comics, Alliance of Independent Media Stores, and Value Music Group of Indie Stores. Across America, in-store performances by top artists like Regina Spektor, Metallica, and Thrice will cap off the celebrations. Locally, we are blessed with a record store as unique as they come, The Record Exchange (RX). The RX is a huge supporter of local music, which in itself warrants locals to give back to the shop. You won't find albums by Kris Doty, Low-Fi, or Le Fleur at Wal-Mart, but the RX has dedicated an entire section of their racks to Idaho musicians. Not only is the Record Exchange a cool place to buy records, band shirts, and kitschy toys, it's also the perfect setting for a free show, amongst the rows of CDs and 7"s. The immersion in all-things-music enhances the live performance to create a memorable experience. |

Mansfield In a world engulfed by power chords and three chord jams Mansfield sets itself apart with a unique blend of creativity and phenomenal talent. Featuring the fret board magic of Ken Mansfield on guitar, Shane Bickmore on bass, and Tyler Jones holding it down on the drums, Mansfield has a sound unlike any other in the Boise area. This point is made evident on their version of the classic song “Over the Rainbow.” |

Tuck Nelson It's hard to believe that Boise musician Tuck Nelson has time to sleep. It's difficult to imagine he even has time to breathe. When he's not in school, his talent is spread across three bands (La Knots , The Donna Vulture , and The Shoes ) and the solo project you hear now. Yet through his full schedule, he's still able to create quality music with a clear vision of originality and a voice beyond its writer's years. Although it seems he'd never get a break, Nelson has no qualms about it. "It's quite easy to manage around school and other things because I've been in those bands for so long and sometimes one or two bands aren't as active as the other, so I can get a break," said Nelson. |
