Best New Music

Boisean Trevor Powers’ project, Youth Lagoon, is currently being featured on the front page of Pitchfork in their “Best New Music” section. Refreshingly, the accompanying article focuses on the merits of Powers’ music, and not where he resides. Time and time again, national blogs featuring Idahoan musicians have spent the first several paragraphs of their features painting an antiquated picture of Idaho as one giant potato field, with Doug Martsch playing at a hoedown in the middle of it. It’s nice to see that the music of Youth Lagoon made it possible for a non-resident music journalist to focus on the music at hand, and not preconceived notions of our state.

Congratulations, Trevor!

Behind the music business

The Boise City Department of Arts and History would like to invite everyone to the Old Idaho Penitentiary tonight (5/4) for a free panel discussion on how to book your band. The talk, titled The Business of Booking Your Music Performance, will give Treasure Valley musicians some perspective on what venues, agents, and those outside our local market are looking for in an act. Visual Arts Collective owner Sam Stimpert, local musician Eric Gilbert (of Finn Riggins), and Tony Harrison of Perfect Pitch Artists will make up the panel of experts.

The fun starts at 5:30PM and prepared questions are encouraged!

This month’s BSU Pulse Night is rife with good music from some of the most popular bands in Boise. Castanelli recently placed third in The Venue’s annual Hot Local Knights battle of the bands, and promising newcomers Adam Stip Music have been playing their infectious folk-pop to captive audiences all over town. Both Youth Lagoon and Teens have garnered a lot of hype with music blogs across the country, with Teens even being featured on MTV’s music website The Hive.

Pulse Night is presented by Colorcube, and the festivities start at 8PM on Friday, April 15th at the Linen Building. All ages are welcome, and it’s only $5 to get in. Full bar with ID & pizza from Piehole.

Let’s hear it for the boy

Congrats go out to local filmmaker, Tyler Williams! The music video for Coma Cinema’s “Blue Suicide,” which Williams directed, made it into Stereogum’s 10 Best Videos of the Week. You can also catch Williams’ video for Seattle group Craft Spells’ “After the Moment” on Pitchfork.tv.

Teenage Fever Dream - Red Room - April 2

The Boise Beat is on Facebook! Yeah, I know, a little late to the game. But whatever, we saw the movie and it seemed pretty legit. So if you want to be our fan on Facebook, do it. In other news, there are some pretty awesome shows coming up. Dark Swallows (Ivy from Le Fleur and Phil from The Universal) are playing at the VAC on April 9. It’s $5 and doors are at 8. Boise artists Nick Burgdorf and Lance Brown have a show called Teenage Fever Dream, happening at The Red Room on April 2.

Keep an eye out for more events on our calendar, coming soon.

After you’ve finished tonight’s First Thursday activities, head over to the Red Room Tavern and congratulate our former art contributor, Nick Burgdorf. The mostly-sold collection by Burgdorf (who signs his work as Pickle) will be up and available for viewing all night, including his many pop-art pieces like the one above. The show starts at 9PM and it’s free. Grab a drink, take a look, and put your name on the remaining pieces quickly.
